What of the relationship between the space and the work?

What spaces make great galleries? Does the work have to relate to the surroundings? Or is it better when there is a distinct contrast? Beautiful works displayed in derelict warehouses or the opposite displayed in buildings with beautiful architecture - what is the relationship between the space and the work?

Trove, Eastside Projects, The Edge are examples of warehouse spaces that I think offer a completley different experience to the Ikon and BMAG for example.
