Group Critique 24.01.2013

Upon meeting Mona Casey last Thursday and presenting the unfinished blog, the lack of curatorial research was one of the main suggestions of improvement that arose from the discussion. I suggest looking at articles in art journals, essays from books or online articles as I think it will help us further with the curation of our show.

Mona questioned our thoughts on our theme of fragility - "what does it mean to us?" Our reply indicated that we are depicting this theme "mentally and physically". Lucy then proceeded to emphasise an attachment to materials, which Mona was interested by and suggested is something that we  should  exaggerate in our press release. Of course, all of the works we intend to exhibit deal with aspects of fragility within the concept but what relationship do we have with the material as the curatorial and audience's point of view. Dale's choice of material encompasses fragility as a physical form as does Bethan's decision to use thread attached with pins onto the wall; Kerryanne has requested that she wants to install her artwork due to fear of breakages and/or lack of precision; Winsu's work depicts tea bags having been ripped open spilling tea grains onto the surface of the floor. This discussion has led us to view the works with a materialistic outlook rather than conceptual.

We also discussed the issue with a title of the show. Song titles always seem to be a popular means of inspiration - we could look at literature as our inspiration as Rachael has previously suggested?

The suggestion of advertising the exhibition through Dale's performance piece seems hopeful; perhaps we should change it slightly as we will also have the performance on the opening night. I think we should create a Facebook event to advertise the performance piece as Facebook is widely used and would therefore be most effective as a method of publicising the piece.
